Rain Taylor lay in his rusted hard bed, in his chilly room in the orphanage he had lived in since birth. Outside, the rain was pouring and producing ambient noise as it hit the ground or anything else in its way, and every once in a while you could hear lightning crack, often when you least expected it. Tonight was just another ordinary wet, stormy night.
At least, not for Rain. He was going to break out of the orphanage.
He had been planning this for a long time, since he was about eight. But now he had decided that tonight is the night his plans will come into motion. He got up from his bed. No one was watching. Good. He hadn’t made any bonds with other orphans in the twelve years he had been here, so there was nothing to leave behind. He got to work. He looked around for something to break the only window in the room. Soon he settled on the lamp. It wasn’t too big and it wouldn’t make too much noise. Of course he was very fast, so it didn’t matter how much noise it made because he was ready to leap out of the scene the moment the window broke, and before anyone can get to the room and discover his absence he will have fled by then. He plugged the lamp out of the power socket and gave it a strong hurl to the window. It made a satisfying smash as it hit the glass, and he instantly jumped out and made a run for it.
He had never been able to see anything outside of the orphanage, and he had no knowledge of the outer world. To have a change of scenery after twelve years of living in that orphanage seemed too good to be true. But for the moment, he had to run and search for shelter from the relentless rain.
Not too long after, he came across the town of Artibus. Not many people were out on the streets at the moment because they’d rather have shelter and comfort indoors. He couldn’t just knock on the door of a random house and ask if he could sleep there for the night. That would be low. But he couldn’t stay outside all night. He was able to find a figure off in the distance that looked female. He thought maybe she could help him, so he ran over to her.
“Hey, excuse me.” He called out to get the lady’s attention.
She turned over. She looked tougher than Rain would’ve thought. She had battle armour over her body, and her expression was that of a ruthless warrior. Rain went silent for the next few seconds.
“Yes, what is it?” She barked. “I have something important to take care of, and I can’t waste much more time.”
“Where are you headed?”
“And why do you want to know? Are you an enemy of the Phantom Guild?”
“Is that where you belong to?”
She lifted her fringe to show a red headband with an odd black symbol on it. It resembled a half moon, but it had sharp points sticking out of it, and there was a smaller one facing back-to-back. “If you don’t have any business with me, I’ll be on my way. Farewell.” She ran off, without a moment to spare.
Whoever she is, she sure doesn’t have time to sit still. Seeing as she was the only person he had seen out in the street tonight, and he was interested as to where she was going, he followed behind her, trying his best to make sure she wouldn’t notice him.
Eventually, she stopped right outside the entrance of a large, intimidating cave, located off in the mountains. The entrance to said cave resembled the large gaping mouth of a beast – it even had jagged spikes at the top and bottom resembling the teeth. When Rain noticed she had reached her destination, he skidded in the ground, which unfortunately caught her attention.
She turned her head around to see him right in front of her. “It’s you again.” She claimed with a cold tone.
“Don’t worry, I’m not from the competition to your guild, and I’m not on a mission to assassinate you. I just wanted to tag along.”
“I’m sorry, but I work alone. I wouldn’t assume you know any combat, and even if you did you’d just slow me down. Now go on back home, your parents will be worried about you. Proceed in here and no doubt you’ll be killed.”
“I’m coming with you!” Rain snapped, desperate to come with her.
“Why? So you can get slaughtered by a fifty-foot tall cave dwelling monster? Fine! If that’s what you want, be my guest!” She turned back to the cave’s entrance and walked in.
Rain calmed down, and thought rationally. “I can’t go home, my parents orphaned me and I have no idea where they are. The only place I can go is a rundown orphanage, and I never want to see that place again.” He explained to her, before she left ear shot. He was unable to tell if she could hear him or not, but either way, he was willing to step inside the caves.
He continued to follow her as she explored deeper into the labyrinth. It got difficulty to keep up with her, but he was persistent. Although when he saw monsters come out to attack her and she drew out her large dual knives to fend them off, he did shiver inside. But he refused to turn back. Aside from that, it was also tricky to go unnoticed, as footsteps made loud echoes in the cave and they had to walk through ankle-deep water that made splash sounds as they went through it. It was possible that she did know he was still following her, she just decided not to do anything about it because she gave him warning enough. If he wanted to put his life on the line, it was fine by her.
Eventually they came to a large but empty space, dark and ambient, the only noise being the water dripping onto the ground and of course the echoes made by the footsteps. Rain started to tense up, but none of his fear was visible. The lady warrior, on the other hand, seemed perfectly calm and collective, as if slaying monsters was just another day in the life.
“I see you decided to come.” She suddenly spoke to Rain. She didn’t stop in her tracks or even turn her head around. “I hope you don’t have anything waiting for you back home, just in case I can’t protect you.”
“I don’t have a home. I never knew or saw my parents. That’s why I’m coming along with you, anything’s better than the hellhole that was my orphanage.”
“Suit yourself.” It wasn’t much longer afterward that they heard a loud, frightening roar, which had to belong to the monster she had to defeat.
Sure enough it came out and towered about the two. Its head resembled that of a bull’s skull, but it had wings like a dragon.
“That’s the cave dwelling monster? I’ve never seen anything like it!” Rain shouted out loud, and he needed to if he wanted to be heard over the monster.
The girl jumped into action and dashed around the monster to find the chance to slash with her knives, which would form fire as part of the attack. Unfortunately, it managed to knock her aside and lunged towards Rain, and before he could react, he was knocked unconscious with a fierce slash attack.
The girl, who had stumbled to her knees, managed to get back up slowly, and before the monster could attack Rain again, she exploited its weakness while it was off guard and slashed it with her knives multiple times one after the other. Then, she stuck both knives into it, and created a firey blast that sent her flying backwards and finished the monster off. She quickly got Rain out of the way before it fell forward with him underneath.
She carried Rain over her shoulder, and without a comment on the battle, walked out of the cave and back to the town where she first found him.
She leaned him against a wall and sat him there, and afterward she was ready to head back to her guild, believing that he would be okay from here. She began to walk away, but then stopped and thought over what he said. She figured she might as well give him what he wants, and maybe he could be trained into a decent addition to the guild. She picked him back up and carried him back to the guild. “You owe me one, you got that?” She told him, even though she knew he couldn’t hear her in his unconscious state.
Just thought I'd put this up here for :iconaquathecatofficial: and my other good friends to see.
I won't put the whole story on here, that'll be on FictionPress.
Tell me what you think and if possible suggest a title for the story to me! (Seriously, I've been stuck on it for what seems like ages)
